COD's Architecture Innovators: Leading the Future of Design & Sustainable Housing

  • BY VIP LOUNGE @ Palm Springs Convention Center 277 North Avenida Caballeros Palm Springs, CA, 92262 United States (map)

College of the Desert’s (COD) Architecture and Environmental Design program created a collaborative partnership in 2020 involving students focused on creating sustainable and functional living spaces that address the growing need for affordable housing. Originating as a class competition, faculty challenged students to design tiny houses on wheels that comply with national regulations for recreational vehicles. The winning design, funded by a $125,000 Strong Workforce Grant, serves as a model for sustainable housing and aims to educate both students and the public on the benefits of adopting such practices.

Constructed with a focus on efficiency and environmental impact, the first COD tiny home, measuring just 225 square feet, features amenities such as dual-glazed vinyl windows, a multi-split air conditioning/heating system, sustainable royal vinyl flooring, recycled wool insulation, low-VOC paints, a tankless water heater, a rainwater-harvesting system, and solar panels.

Inspired by mid-century modern architecture, the design showcases clean lines, simple forms, and a connection to nature. The interior boasts a space-efficient living area, kitchenette, bathroom, queen-sized sleeping loft, and washer/dryer combo. Following the success of the initial and second project, a third home with ADA compliance, is currently under construction with the design created by students Molly Glaab and Gleisy Romero.

“The tiny house build doesn’t just benefit the students; it also presents an opportunity for residents seeking affordable housing options,” adds Bitanga. “It’s a model that can be replicated in all communities. The project aims to educate students and the public about the benefits of sustainable housing and encourages them to adopt similar practices in their own lives.

"As we curate Intersect Palm Springs to showcase the finest art galleries in the country, it's equally important for us to invest in emerging talent, including our architectural and design students excelling in higher education. These students represent the future of innovation and creativity in the field,” shares Tim von Gal, CEO of Intersect Art and Design. “By bridging the worlds of art and education, we contribute to the growth of these students and foster a vibrant community that values both tradition and the evolution of artistic disciplines."

We invite you to come meet COD’s faculty and students involved with the project and see firsthand the transformative power of architecture, design, and sustainability.
